The Maisha Mapya Foundation (Swahili for “New Life”) is a private initiative aimed at rescuing girls and young women from sexual exploitation in the webcam industry.
Many of the studios where these girls work are run by truly unscrupulous bosses. The girls are forced to work extremely long shifts under conditions that are truly inhumane. Sometimes two or three girls work in the same room at the same time.
Most of the girls working in these studios are subjected to severe verbal, physical, and psychological abuse. Some of them have been raped by their bosses, are forced to live under unimaginable conditions, and are paid only minimum wage. It is heartbreaking to hear that some bosses leave the girls without food, water, and other basic necessities, forcing the girls to dip into their own pockets to provide for their basic needs. Given the wages some of these employers offer, it becomes very difficult for the girls to support themselves and their families. It’s truly depressing because the girls cannot leave the studio later in life, as they cannot save enough money to start a small business or rent an apartment.

After talking to some of these girls, I realized there’s more to their lives and stories than what’s visible on camera. Some of them received a good education, but life turned out differently than they expected, and they had to resort to streaming to earn an income.
Other girls, on the other hand, come from very poor families and had to start working in the webcam industry to support their families. In most cases, none of these girls actually enjoy working as webcam models. They’ve tried many options, but webcamming is the easiest and fastest way for them to provide for themselves and their loved ones.
Unfortunately, some studio owners and bosses take advantage of the girls’ situation and see them as a way to make money. The girls are promised a better future—a way out of a life full of misery, financial hardship, and mental frustration. When they arrive at the studios, they are confronted with a completely different world.
Of course, this foundation cannot rescue all the girls from these bosses, but we can make a start and perhaps give others an idea of how we can make the world a little better. Certainly, some of these girls stay in the webcam business but continue as independent models. This way, they receive their full earnings from the site and have the chance to save money and later make their dreams come true (finishing a started education, starting a small local business, or something like that).
We also know that these pimps are constantly recruiting girls, especially in poor countries like Kenya or Colombia—to name just two—and time and again, girls fall into the hands of these unscrupulous pimps because they have no other way to earn money.
